Aggreko has extended its support for grid operators and grid-scale projects by becoming the only provider to achieve grid code compliance across 11 European countries.

Following a comprehensive testing and certification process, Aggreko can now support full grid code compliance for its 1.5MW generator fleet in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Romania, and Czechia, making it the only supplier to offer this level of coverage across the continent.

The certification will allow Aggreko’s fleet to integrate with public electricity networks, supporting large-scale power projects through applications such as adding generation capacity, mitigating spikes in demand, exporting power to the grid, and grid balancing.

These applications are explored in more depth in Aggreko’s industry report, Breaking the Gridlock, which maps the structural challenges facing Europe’s electricity networks, and highlights how decentralised energy can support this transition.

By achieving grid code compliance, Aggreko can also accelerate the delivery of large-scale power projects, enabling gas-powered solutions of more than 50 MW to be deployed in a matter of months rather than years. This helps grid operators to address capacity constraints more quickly while long-term infrastructure projects are developed.

Connor Docherty, Head of Product for Gas at Aggreko, said: “The challenges that European electricity networks are grappling with are well-documented. Decentralised energy will have a critical role to play during this critical period, which is where grid code compliance comes into play.

“With the ability to integrate with grid infrastructure, we can support grid operators and high energy users alike through decentralised energy generation. This will help to balance the grid, make up capacity shortfalls to ensure that large power projects can go ahead, assist increased renewable integration and avoid blackouts.”

Supporting grid-scale applications is an area which Aggreko has extensive experience in. When Romania’s grid operator sought to upgrade an ageing combined heat and power (CHP) system, Aggreko was called upon to bridge the gap. Over a four-year period, Aggreko delivered 43MW of power to Romania’s national grid via a best-in-class CHP package, all while offering grid balancing services and reducing carbon emissions by 45% in the process.

With grid code compliance across 11 countries, this level of support is something that Aggreko can now offer across the continent, helping to address grid challenges and ensuring that projects stay on track.

Aggreko’s fleet is also equipped with Aggreko Remote Monitoring (ARM) and advanced controls systems, which offer both proactive diagnostics and in-depth analytics for all equipment on site, with detailed insights at both asset and plant level.
