As heat pumps continue to become a more common feature in homes across the UK, installers need protection solutions that are designed to suit the way these systems actually operate. In response, BG has launched its new B+ Heat Pump Protection Range, a purpose-built offering developed to support safe, stable and reliable heat pump installations.
The new range includes populated consumer units and dedicated Type B+ devices, designed specifically to manage the demands associated with heat pump applications. With the ability to handle AC, DC, pulsed DC and high-frequency currents, BG B+ solutions are engineered to reduce nuisance tripping, support system continuity and give contractors greater confidence when specifying protection for modern low-carbon technologies.

Conventional protection devices are not always the best fit for applications such as heat pumps, where more complex current characteristics can come into play. BG’s B+ Heat Pump Protection Range has been developed to address that challenge directly, combining advanced protection technology with installer-friendly formats suited to real-world installations.
A key strength of the range is its Type B+ RCD technology, which is designed specifically for heat pump applications and supports high-frequency operation up to 20kHz. That is particularly relevant where manufacturer specifications call for protection capable of handling higher frequency currents. BG’s B+ devices are designed to achieve this level of performance, helping installers select a solution aligned with the requirements of modern heat pump systems.
The range also includes advanced enclosure solutions, developed with practical installation environments in mind. Housed within a robust IP65 fire-rated enclosure, BG’s populated heat pump consumer units are available with 20A or 32A circuit protection options, offering the flexibility needed across a range of installation scenarios.
Alongside the populated units, BG is also offering dedicated B+ RCD devices in a compact double-module DIN rail format, allowing for easy integration into BG consumer units. These devices provide 2-pole isolation, protection against earth leakage faults and integrated surge delay, delivering both user and circuit protection in a format that is straightforward to install.
Available in 63A and 100A options, with 30mA sensitivity and 6kA breaking capacity, the devices have also been optimised for bidirectional current flow, making them a practical fit for today’s increasingly sophisticated energy systems.
Philip Grove, Product Manager for BG Circuit Protection, said:
“As low-carbon technologies become more common, installers need protection devices that are designed for the realities of those applications, not just adapted from more traditional uses. Heat pumps place different demands on a system, particularly where DC and higher frequency currents are involved, so it’s important contractors have access to solutions that are purpose-built for the job. Our new BG B+ Heat Pump Protection Range has been developed to give installers exactly that, combining robust protection, practical formats and the confidence of a solution designed for modern heating systems.”
Backed by a 10-year warranty and designed to comply with relevant EC/EN standards, the BG B+ Heat Pump Protection Range delivers peace of mind for contractors working on today’s evolving electrical installations.
With the launch of the B+ Heat Pump Protection Range, BG continues to expand its circuit protection portfolio in line with the needs of the modern installer, offering future-facing protection solutions for the next generation of electrical systems.
