From NESO’s Strategic Spatial Energy Plan, to Northumbria Water’s Smart Sewer System: Industry Leaders Share Transformative Projects

Future of Utilities Summit, taking place 11-12 June 2025 at London’s QEII Centre, will showcase a selection of the most interesting real-world case studies and innovation projects reshaping Britain’s utilities landscape.

As Britain’s energy & water sectors face unprecedented pressures from climate change, aging infrastructure, and evolving consumer demands, speakers will deliver insights on the industry’s most successful responses to these challenges,  and demonstrate actionable pathways to a truly modern utilities system.

Net Zero in action

The transition from theory to implementation takes centre stage as Alice Etheridge, Head of Strategic Spatial Energy Planning at NESO, provides an update on the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP). Alice will outline the project’s mapping out of potential new renewable locations to help accelerate the energy transition.

Practical pathways to net zero feature prominently. Severine Turgis of CLCH & West London NHS Trust will present a comprehensive case study on two successful hospital transitions from gas to electric energy systems, providing a replicable model for public sector decarbonisation at a larger scale.

Technology at scale

Beyond decarbonisation, the Summit will be showcasing smart solutions across the utilities space. Tony Baines, Wastewater Treatment Manager at Northumbrian Water Group will be delivering updates on their Smart Sewer System, a UK-first project set to reduce the reliance of storm overflows across the region.

UK Power Networks will also reveal how AI is revolutionising voltage management across their networks with a fascinating case study from Luke Hughes, Head of Network Planning.

Revolutionary insights and updates from NESO

The Summit will also feature critical updates on regulatory and market developments, with Rebecca Beresford, Director of Markets at NESO, analysing the first six months of year-round Demand Flexibility Service implementation, and Matthew Vickers providing the latest on NESO’s Connections Reform program.

The utilities sector is no longer in planning mode, we’re now firmly in the implementation phase of the net zero transition. This year’s Summit goes beyond theoretical discussion to showcase the innovations and projects actively transforming our energy and water systems,” said Rose Shohet, Senior Conference Producer at Future of Utilities.
