Two engineers at Scottish greentech innovator Katrick Technologies have been selected as finalists at the Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2024. The awards, organised by Scottish Renewables, bring together industry professionals to celebrate the engineers who will be driving the evolution of renewable energy in Scotland. The winners will be announced in a ceremony on Thursday 18 April at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

Katrick Technologies is a Glasgow-based company focused on developing novel innovations in the zero-carbon technology market. It is currently developing a market-first wind power generation technology, its Wind Panel, that converts gust and ground-effect winds into clean energy using oscillations. Two members of the engineering team working on the development of the Wind Panel have been shortlisted as finalists in the award scheme, highlighting their contributions to the development of exciting new technologies.

Mechanical design engineer Lex Elliott has been shortlisted for the Analyst Award. After joining the company in 2021 as an intern, Lex has played a crucial role in the development of the Wind Panel. He was also heavily involved in analysis of data collected in wind mapping studies, collecting 86,400 data points which need to be analysed daily.

Lex has enhanced the data processing at Katrick Technologies to map wind flows and to determine the operating speeds and anticipated electrical production of the Wind Panel. He has also identified gust winds as an untapped source to generate peak power production through his data analysis, which has influenced the overall design of the technology to allow it to respond quickly to wind speed changes.

Shortlisted for the Engineer Award is mechanical engineer Matthew Hughes. Matthew joined Katrick Technologies while completing his MEng degree in 2020, initially working on its Passive Cooling technology. In the development of the Wind Panel, Matthew has been a key figure in designing and building a new subsystem that has exceeded industry targets and allowed the Wind Panel prototype to achieve higher outputs at lower speeds.

Matthew is currently working on the efficiency of the energy transfer subsystem to allow it to handle fluctuating inputs and speeds and to provide consistent electrical outputs. Matthew continues to play a critical role in the future of the technology as it advances on its journey to market.

“Our engineering team is at the heart of everything we do, and it is their hard work, creativity and skills in problem solving that have allowed us to not only bring our concept to life, but to develop a technology that exceeds all of our original performance targets,” said Vijay Madlani, CEO at Katrick Technologies. “Lex and Matthew being shortlisted for these awards is a testament to their outstanding contributions to our company and to the future of green energy.”
