Thorn Lighting’s road lanterns are proving extremely popular with councils up and down the country, illuminating everything from small cul-de-sacs up to dual carriageways and motorways, for new builds and refurbishments. Three recent projects that have been undertaken are Darlington Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and Thurrock Council, utilising Thorn’s CiviTEQ, FleXity and R2L2
Highly efficient CiviTEQ LED lanterns have been used throughout a major refurbishment of residential and major roads as part of a roll out programme for Darlington Borough Council. The Thorn lanterns were the preferred choice when the council wanted to replace old existing SON lamp technology and move to a more efficient LED type luminaire to significantly reduce DBC’s overall energy usage and CO2 emissions.
The vast scale of the refurbishment project meant that the replacement had to be split into phases and started with replacing the highest energy using lanterns on major roads in the Darlington area. After a successful initial phase the project has now spread out into residential areas with the majority of the new lanterns being retrofitted onto the existing street lighting columns but some older lighting columns have been replaced as and when required.
Thorn’s CiviTEQ, FleXity and R2L2 road lanterns have been included in an extensive installation and replacement programme throughout the County of Lancashire on schemes that range from small residential cul-de-sacs to major dual carriageway traffic routes. The project, undertaken by Lancashire County Council, has addressed the issue of high energy costs by replacing the existing HID, SOX and SON Luminaires with Thorn’s highly efficient LED luminaires. This has resulted in reduced maintenance and has created a distinctive urban lighting design. Thorn LED fittings have been used on new build installations in the County but the vast majority of the project has involved replacing old, existing fittings.
In planning the regeneration of its roads, Lancashire County Council was keen to address several key criteria, namely appropriate lighting levels with increased energy-efficiency, reduced operating costs and reduced carbon emissions, with the ability to save energy further by Part Night Dimming of the light fittings. Thorn has achieved this through the deployment of low energy, low maintenance luminaires that utilise the very latest LED technology. The design requirements were also very specific and subject to established British & European Standards, which meant that the quality of light had to meet the required levels without exceeding them.
CiviTEQ LED road lanterns have also been installed as part of an extensive replacement programme to major road networks undertaken by Thurrock Council district, which includes residential estates, distributor roads and major roundabouts. The new lighting will address many of the previous issues of poor lighting resulting from the old style SON/SOX luminaires, whilst maximising energy savings and reducing maintenance.
The project has seen the installation of over 13,000 of Thorn’s CiviTEQ lanterns, which were chosen through a tender evaluation process. Thurrock Council’s tender procedure had to meet rigorous key criteria which included improved lighting levels with increased energy efficiency which, in turn would improve whole life costs and the ability to save further energy by dimming in the future, which was crucial. Lantern weight was also taken into consideration as many of the fittings were being used on the existing concrete columns which could be adapted and sleeved to allow fitment of the new lanterns. Other key considerations were delivery times, as Thurrock were working to tight deadlines which had to be adhered to and lastly, the council need to use a well-established, trusted and guaranteed.
Thorn’s CiviTEQ is a cost-effective LED road lighting solution suitable for projects that require the best balance between cost of ownership and performance. The luminaire is fitted with an R-PEC® optic to bring safe and efficient light to residential streets and high traffic roads and, with 2 size options up to 17klm and 12 precise light distributions, CiviTEQ adapts to any installation layout. It is available with a comprehensive range of controls including programmable Bi-Power functionality to activate or deactivate dimming on site.
Modern, discreet and versatile, FleXity is a post top LED lantern that offers a fast return on investment for city space and amenity lighting, with a 100,000 hour maintenance free life and low cost of ownership. FleXity has dedicated optics, integrated Bi-Power dimming and a choice of protectors, clear for optimised performance and diffused for greater visual comfort.
R2L2 is an attractively proportioned LED road lantern at the forefront of LED technology, it features a true Universal Mounting Arrangement and an unobtrusive style complementary to a wide range of road lighting applications. It delivers class-leading performance with outstanding uniformity which provides an even distribution of light on the ground.
