New research has ranked the world’s leading countries when it comes to renewable energy capacity, and Canada comes out on top, as the country’s generating stations are able to produce 268MWh of renewable energy per 100,000 people.

The team at Utility Bidder have created the Renewable Energy Index, which reveals the areas of the UK producing the most renewable energy, the counties where the most applications for renewable energy sites have been refused, the areas with the most operational renewable energy sites, the areas where renewable energy production has increased the most and the countries producing the most renewable energy.

The research has revealed:

  • Canada has been named the country producing the most renewable energy. The country’s generating stations are capable of producing 268 MWh of renewable energy per 100,000 people, which is the highest in the world.
  • Germany takes second place with 166 MWh of installed capacity. Almost 50% of electricity generated in Germany came from renewable sources. Despite this promising total, Germany is aiming to generate 80% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
  • The countries featured have a combined capacity of more than 2.1 million MWh, and 107MWh per 100,000 people.

The research has revealed the following about renewable energy production in the UK:

  • Fife currently has over 1,500 operational renewable energy sites per 10,000 households, which is more than any other UK location.
  • Between 2020-2021, renewable energy produced in Inverclyde increased to almost 300%; the biggest increase in the whole of the UK and nearly 230% more than any other local authority.
  • The county of Highland in Scotland has taken the top spot among the counties where applications for renewable energy sites have been refused the most (40).
