Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2023 will be held as usual in the £35 million, 20,000 square metre Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. The venue has been home to the show since 2008 and next year marks the event’s 25th anniversary. It started out as a regional show and has since become the UK’s most comprehensive annual engineering exhibition, merging the worlds of mechanical engineering and electronics in approximately equal measure. Online registration is live at: https://www.industrysouth.co.uk/register

A large proportion of exhibitors have supported the show since the beginningand the percentage of returning firms is very high. Many regular participants are already signed up for 2023. The exhibitor list covers nearly every aspect of engineering, from mechanical, electronic, electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components of all kinds, to high-technology machine tools, production systems including many in the burgeoning field of additive manufacturing, business and engineering software, workshop equipment and a wide variety of subcontracting and consultancy services covering both of the show’s main disciplines.

Having the best of mechanical engineering and electronics under one roof gives the event a unique character and makes visiting an efficient way to address multiple sourcing requirements. There is no separation between the areas, allowing people to visit the different engineering disciplines unhindered. It is often said that this is one of the show’s principal attractions, as it leads to the discovery of exhibitors and technologies that could otherwise easily be missed. Technology Trails grouping together firms with expertise in similarareas guide visitors around the event.

Manufacturing industry is beset not only by the damage caused by Covid-19 but by more recent challenges as well, such as the impact of Brexit, supply chain disruption, soaring energy costs, skills shortages and most recently the prospect of higher taxation. Solutions to help ameliorate some of these negatives are emerging strongly as themes from exhibitors at next year’s show.

There will be much at the exhibition to interest readers. The use and conservation of energy is a familiar theme. Advanced Chemical Etching, for example, will focus on how its expertise can help in the race for electrification and hydrogen fuel cell systems, so important in the development of energy management in existing and future electric vehicles. The scope of its activities spans safety critical components for aircraft and F1 cars, meshes and electronic connectors, battery interconnectors, fuel cell bi-polar plates and heat exchangers.

Relec

Another exhibitor, Top Hex, has over 20 years’ experience designing and manufacturing custom electronic controls and displays for process machinery, laboratories, retail environments and consumer applications worldwide, energy saving being a prime goal. DMS Technologies specialises in design and manufacture of battery systems for a wide range of applications, including in extreme temperatures and rugged environments, and will be displaying a new range of standard LiFePO4 batteries designed to reduce or eliminate the expense of testing in conventional lithium-ion battery applications.

Jauch Quartz UK will be promoting its battery power supplies that it has been producing for mobile applications since 1974 at its headquarters in Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany and in its UK HQ in Frimley. Easby Electronics, a leading UK supplier and distributor of electronic components, will present a vast range of products including custom batteries, power supplies, semiconductors, displays, passive components, opto electronics, IoT devices and EV charging cables and accessories. Delta Impact is another a supplier of electric vehicle charging cables, sockets and accessories as well as electronic components and PCBs. CamdenBoss, a manufacturer of high quality custom fabricated enclosures in plastic and metal, includes in its product range bespoke EV charging enclosures.

Meanwhile, Relec Electronics will exhibit its range of AC/DC power supplies, display modules and electronic power supplies aimed at diverse applications including in the rail instrumentation and medical sectors. Phoenix Dynamicsdesigns and manufactures high-performance cable assemblies including wire and cable harnesses, battery cables, power leads, RF cables, fibre-optic assemblies, and electro-mechanical assemblies such as control panels and distribution boxes. It too is heavily involved in supplying the specialist automotive and energy industries.

LED lighting is key to reducing energy consumption in every home and workplace, and numerous exhibitors will stress their contributions to the technology. Cembre offers a range of LED products such as flashlights, lamps and portable spotlights. Coilcraft produces high performance wire-wound inductors and transformers for LED lighting. Peli Products (UK) also offers LED lighting and RJS Electronics’ range of switches are available with LED illumination and custom options.

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2023 and the co-located AutoAero, a specialist theme within the exhibition devoted to aerospace and automotive engineering, opens from 7th to 9th February. There is a free bus service between Farnborough’s train stations directly to the show. Parking and admission to the exhibitions are also free of charge.
