On the 22nd and 23rd November 2017, Powerstar will be showcasing its innovative battery-based energy storage solutions, VIRTUE and VIRTUE EV on stand D34 at The Energy Management Exhibition (EMEX) at the ExCeL Centre in London.

EMEX provides the opportunity for energy users to connect with leading experts and policy makers of the industry and affords the chance for energy users to learn of new developments and innovations in the industry.

During the event, Powerstar will be encouraging visitors to its stand to openly discuss the topic of energy storage and its potential within the future UK energy landscape, with industry leading experts, as well as answering any questions about its innovative, engineering-led solutions, VIRTUE and VIRTUE EV, whilst providing examples from real life applications.

What is VIRTUE?

Powerstar VIRTUE is an integrated energy management and micro-grid solution with smart grid control. It captures electricity produced by renewable and non-renewable sources and stores it for use when required, providing savings on electricity costs by enabling businesses to utilise the stored energy to go off-grid during times of peak DUoS and Triad tariffs.

Another benefit of VIRTUE energy storage solutions is the ability to help the grid balance demand by either taking a business off-grid or by supplying the National Grid with energy from the system during times of high demand. Additionally, businesses can receive revenue by providing this service through grid contracts such as Demand Side Response (DSR) schemes.

One of the most valuable benefits of VIRTUE is full Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) capabilities, which eliminates the need for additional back-up generation. This can be of paramount importance for sites which require a secure and constant energy supply to critical equipment. Furthermore, when statistics surrounding the security of the supply are considered, such as 986 blackouts or brownouts throughout 2016, a 46% increase on the 2015 rates, it becomes apparent that any site that would suffer as a result of a power outage would benefit from this functionality to avoid operational downtime, wasted stock from automated processes and potential electrical equipment failures.

What is VIRTUE EV?

As an extension of the applications for VIRTUE, Powerstar launched the VIRTUE EV charging solution in December 2016, which also carries the benefits that apply to VIRTUE, such as avoiding peak-tariff periods, increasing the reliability of renewables and UPS capabilities.

VIRTUE EV is a combined DC rapid/fast charger and energy storage system with an integrated 6kW solar canopy. It provides up to 90kWh of storage with 50kWh bi-directional grid-tied inverters.

The importance of VIRTUE EV has been brought into sharper focus in recent months due to the government’s plan to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars from 2040, including declarations from manufacturers such as Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover to stop launching new models powered solely by internal combustion engines from 2019 and 2020 respectively.

VIRTUE EV combats many of the obstacles experienced by the EV market by introducing local rapid charging and storage to greatly reduce demand spikes and supply the highest possible charging rate by utilising stored energy. Not only does this method help the wider grid infrastructure, but it also helps reduce cost on the local network.

Due to Powerstar’s engineering-led ethos, all solutions are built bespoke based on a full site analysis and clients’ individual requirements, ensuring that businesses’ objectives are achieved, whether it be to reduce costs and emissions or generate more revenue.
