Households looking to cut energy bills this summer are being urged to rethink when they use their washing machine, as experts say timing can make a noticeable difference to electricity costs.

With many homes using more appliances during warmer weather, energy specialists say running washing machines during peak evening hours can push bills higher than necessary.

The most expensive period for electricity usage is typically between 4pm and 7pm, when national demand surges as people return home, cook dinner and switch on appliances.

Gordon Wallis from Your NRG said: “A lot of households automatically put washing on in the early evening without realising that is usually when electricity demand is at its highest.”

“Using appliances during off-peak periods can help reduce pressure on the grid and potentially lower energy costs for households on time-of-use tariffs.”

Experts say the cheapest times to run washing machines are usually later in the evening, early morning or during quieter daytime periods when demand is lower.

Summer can also provide households with an added advantage, as warmer temperatures mean clothes dry faster outdoors, reducing the need for costly tumble dryer use.

Gordon Wallis explained that small habit changes can add up over time.

He said: “One of the biggest savings people can make during summer is simply avoiding unnecessary tumble dryer use after washing clothes.”

“Using outdoor drying where possible can significantly reduce electricity consumption across the warmer months.”

Energy experts are also advising households to wash clothes at lower temperatures where suitable, as heating water accounts for a large proportion of a washing machine’s energy usage.

Running fuller loads instead of multiple smaller washes can also improve efficiency.

Gordon Wallis added: “People often focus on switching suppliers to save money, but changing everyday habits inside the home can also make a real difference.”

“Simple adjustments to when and how appliances are used can help households keep summer energy bills under control.”
