Neilston Substation is a key pillar of green energy delivery in the UK, providing stability and efficiency to the national grid through a consistent, blackout-proof supply.

Sarens has participated in one of the substation expansions carrying out the loading and unloading of several heavy components to be installed at the facility, including a 148 tonne transformer.

The Neilston substation handles 400kV and 275kV circuits and is one of the main drivers of the country’s transformation to the use of cleaner and more sustainable energies, as it receives a large part of its electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy.

Neilston Substation, located in East Renfrewshire, Scotland, is a key pillar of green energy delivery in the UK, providing stability and efficiency to the national grid through a consistent, blackout-proof supply. The facility has undergone several upgrade projects along the way to increase its capacity and power output.

Recently Sarens, global leader and reference in crane rental services, heavy lifting and engineered transport, has been part of one of the substation expansions carrying out on behalf of its client Colletts Heavy Haulage the loading and unloading of several heavy components to be installed at the facility, including a 148 tonne transformer.

For this project, Sarens’ engineering team selected the Liebherr LTM1800 crane for its load capacity of up to 800 tons and mobility. The loading and unloading of materials took 3 days, including the assembly and disassembly of the crane.

Four Sarens staff members were on site for this operation, including a Crane Operator, the Lift Supervisor as well as two Transport Drivers. The main challenge they had to face during the project was achieving the necessary ground bearing pressures stipulated by the Port, in order to ensure safe conditions for all the personnel involved in the operation.

Substations are key facilities within the framework of a country’s electrical distribution system. The main function of these plants is to transform the different voltage levels of electricity so that it can be efficiently and safely distributed to homes and businesses. That is why a core part of the installation is the transformer, as the 148-tonne one installed with the help of Sarens heavy-lifting engineering.

The Neilston substation handles 400kV and 275kV circuits and is one of the main drivers of the country’s transformation to the use of cleaner and more sustainable energies, as it receives a large part of its electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. In this line, one of the most relevant expansions of the substation is the Neilston Greener Grid Park, whose objective is to maintain a stable energy flow through the grid, preventing blackouts and making use of renewable sources.

Sarens UK team has extensive experience in the country. They have been able to support the construction of the Hinkley Point C power station using the SGC250 ring crane known as Big Carl, the largest land based crane in the world. Sarens has also undertaken the Process Module and Process plant movements and lifts for the FAST project at the Fawley refinery, the installation of a 5000te concrete culvert on the rail line close to Glasgow, as well the movement of a 4000te ship block for new Class 26 Frigates.
