New from Trane are the FLEX N HP and ARIES N HP, two new high performance air-to-water heat pumps that elevate operational efficiency, expanding the company’s R290 refrigerant portfolio.

Engineered to maximise the thermodynamic strengths of R290, the non-ozone-depleting and ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant, both FLEX N HP and ARIES N HP deliver exceptionally high seasonal efficiencies in heating across the entire temperature range. Their performance stands out in the market, providing a clear advantage for customers who prioritise sustainability and low operating costs. The units offer extended operating maps, with continuous operation down to –20°C ambient temperatures and hot water production capabilities up to 77°C, enabling consistent performance in demanding climates and making them suitable for new installations or retrofit projects, including boiler replacements.

“Building owners are demanding solutions that lower their operating costs and carbon footprint while ensuring safe, robust, year-round performance,” said Erik Van Oossanen, Product Management Leader at Trane. “With the addition of these units, Trane becomes the only manufacturer to offer a full lineup of R290 systems spanning heat pump and chiller segments, giving customers unmatched choice and flexibility across all applications. This breadth underscores Trane’s drive to accelerate shift toward low-carbon thermal management systems built around performance, reliability, and safety.”

Trane FLEX N HP is a modular air-sourced heat pump designed with full inverter scroll technology, allowing precise, efficient operation across varying loads. Its modular architecture enables quick hydraulic connection and streamlined electronic control in banks of up to six units, supporting heating capacities that extend beyond 700 kW. To make full use of the modularity, the units are simple to transport and install, allowing customers to increase capacity easily over time as building needs evolve. The platform’s compact footprint and side by side installation minimise the space required on site, while its low refrigerant charge of less than 5 kg per circuit up to 125 kW, reinforces both safety and environmental responsibility. FLEX N HP delivers high seasonal heating efficiency, reaching SCOP values up to 4.5 for typical operating conditions. The unit can operate in low ambient temperatures down to –20°C while producing leaving water temperatures as high as 77°C.

Trane ARIES N HP is a packaged all-in-one solution with capacity up to 230 kW. Built on high efficiency scroll compressor technology and leveraging a double-circuit configuration, ARIES N HP ensures smooth defrosting and reliable heating performance even during low temperature operation. The unit’s design, layout and dimensions align closely with traditional HFC‑based installed units, enabling straightforward replacement and simplifying the retrofit process for customers upgrading existing systems. The heat pump delivers seasonal efficiencies up to 4.3 for typical operating conditions. Its operating map mirrors the versatility of FLEX N HP, enabling operation down to –20°C ambient and producing hot water up to 75°C. Integrated with Trane’s Symbio 800 controls, it also introduces advanced built-in cybersecurity meeting the AICPA Trust Services Security Criteria.

Both FLEX N HP and ARIES N HP feature Trane’s SDS2E (Segregate, Detect, Stop, Signal, and Extract) system to enable safe use of the R290 refrigerant. For modular FLEX N HP configurations, a safety interlock kit option will be mandatory to stop near units in case of a leak, adding an additional layer of protection when multiple units are installed side by side.

“FLEX N HP and ARIES N HP reflect our long-standing dedication to solutions built around real-world customer needs,” added Erik Van Oossanen. “These platforms show how we continue to expand high-efficiency, low‑carbon options for commercial and industrial customers who want peace of mind, and top‑tier performance, supported by our expert service teams.”
